In the edited version this became...The country lane twisted through the tangle of tiny villages that comprised the hill region surrounding
the city, little hamlets where poor farmers worked their fields alongside the summer cottages of the idle rich, who for three months a year pretended to be country squires.


Where's the subject? Is it "poor farmers" or inferred? I see two verbs -- "worked" and "pretended" -- but not sure which is the predicate. I need to find my college style manual.
