Y’all failed to mention that SJM was in fact in favor of a meritocracy

Well folks…I could in fact tell you what happened in chapters 54 and 55 now. Unfortunately it’s not good.

Why did I have to listen to that? Why did I have to hear any of that? Why can’t YA authors use logic and not hormones?

This book is an incredible example of how to tell us your characters are cool without showing us even once

SJM is allergic to letting her characters actually have tough conversations I think

Katie Hanna Tell me more??

R.F. Gammon The government is, somehow, SJM’s favorite characters and no one else. The high lords are (apparently) chosen through power which means the rest of it is just “who has the best magic?” It’s literally the found family rules the world BECAUSE they are Speshul even though everyone else is 100% different. And also they’re the only progressives (ie, Rhys et Al are the only mALeS who aren’t sexist and don’t treat women like objects)

That is... A Lot.

I noticed quite a bit of "the government and the people who enforce its rules are always right" in Crescent City as well. There's an authoritarian streak in these books that I don't like, so I'm not surprised at the meritocracy themes either (or fake meritocracy, "We are the best for the job BECAUSE WE SAY WE ARE")

R.F. Gammon RIGHT. like rhysand goes “I am the most powerful high lord in history” and I’m like HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT. WHO HAS CONFIRMED THAT. YOU CANT BE YOUR ONLY SOURCE. I don’t LIKE it at all
