Overall a very enjoyable book. But still, there were a handful of things I found odd.

Less than 30 pages to go and so far I really liked this book. It is of course a book for people in their early teens but still, the twists are nice, the characters seem real and 3 dimensional, things are not too straightforward but not chaotic either. Maybe putting a dragon in as well was too much, but I will see what else will come in the next pages and how the authors resolved it.

This is funny how Iso is apparently smarter than Hayate the professional yokai hunter. Plus it seems he is drawn to her due to her personality and lifestyle and not her looks, shoking right?
Furthermore I like the word plays they have regarding the effects of magic in this book and how the authors actually seem to know what a Yokai is and what its about.

Hm Hayate seems to be interested in Iso, romantically perhaps, but I am not sure, he does seem to have some awe due to her being so comfortable in deep water while he is terrified of it, plus both met the tea-colored shadow. And I really wonder what is up with that black dragon.

Ok, Hayate and Co have met the Obmyoji from the start as well as the Ama Iso. Makes me wonder what is about that other Onmyoji in the north with the "bear people".
Plus I wonder that when they spoke about a badger able to assume human form they were talking about an actual badger or a racoon dog.

I hope this book will not stay with teasing me. Who is that black dragon? Who is that tea-colored shadow? Why has that one wizard have air instead of wood as his elements? What are those weird dogs? Where do the Yokai come from? Do they come from these eggs at the start of the book?

I am a tad confused here, on one hand they have the spellings and era names so accurate that Hayate is a sexist, but earlier in the books they used the word "September" for the time of the year... odd.
But apart from that the book is really engaging, Hayate comes along as realistic, like I said so much that he is sexist, I think that "dog" thing was another yokai and that "water" spell was really funny.

Hm, this time the five elements are like they are in Chinese elements, so I am curious as to what sort of magic the earlier one using air was.
So far I really enjoy this book, despite Hayate barely being in it, the support characters and the elements based in Japanese and Chinese mythology are interesting enough to keep your attention. Especially the "yang-generator" was a nice little idea.

Two things:
1) Apparently the editor missed that one article (its "der" and not "den"
2) That giant fish (with a head 4-5 times bigger than midteens Iso) is either a kami, as the other divers suggested, or a yokai, as the title suggests.

Well that was a nice and sometimes funny (imagine a ship covered in paper) of paper amulets.
