Intersting, the story of this heraldic sign takes plays in muslim spain apparently. I did not expect that. They tend to be much more local.

Hm, was that female dwarf with the magic pearls a Kobold? She did claim to be the house spirit. And boy that witch in this other story is way more dangerous than usual in folktales, even after her death she continued to terrorize the area and after digging her out twice they had to burn her, because she had removed the stake they had staked her corpse with.

This hitting the rooster sounds like a practice from the Spreewald region, of course there they used a dead rooster now due to animal protection laws.

Hm, when this story said whine gods at the rhine I expected some gods or at least statues, but it really was only a temple. And the next story about the seven sisters sounds a lot like one of the stories by the Brother's Grimm.

What? Done already? And where was the stuff to Odin as a queer figure that he mentioned before and claimed to talk about? Why only talk about mostly dangerous neopaganism and their idiotic christian hatred (but not the similar about progressives) and only shortly how some references to Odin are not a problem?

After all this information about Odin stuff, real and fake, among völkisch academics and racists, it is suprising that Hitler himself had no interest in it any further than the Wagner opera and it is due to his anti-academic feelings.

Oh, so this obsession with Odin and the Norse was primarily in the more educated strata of society. That would explain why the norse gods were such a big thing among authors but not among the folktales that I have seen so far, there they are incredibly rare. Even the fake Ostara was more present.

I really have to keep in mind how these protestants considered the Edda to have remnants of the true christian faith and that was destroyed the catholic church and so had to be better than the catholics. That anti-catholic strain is still very present today.

Odin as attractive? That change was not something I expected to see, even in christian times. I wonder whether that is due to the desire to connect Odin with some mythical forefathers that he describes here.

How does he know that this bavarian "Waudlgaul" has anything to do with Wodan/Odin? It is pretty far removed from the norse or the continental germanics. Wouldn't it be more likely, like he points out in another example, that what some literati wrote filtered down to the masses? And sure as hell, as he points out, none of this can be used to "reconstruct" the pre-christian believes.

These later examples of Odin from christian times really don't seem like Odin at all but rather like the devil who was simply called Odin. Especially the deals and how and where you summon him to get rich.

He makes a good point in that there is not match in common between sami shaminism and the Edda and Odin is also no one who learns his powers and knowlegde to help his community, he does it for personal gain, and so he cannot be a shaman. And I am sure I know some people who use this very broad definition of shamanism that he talks about.

I had completely forgotten that the prologe of Snoris Edda states that the Aesir came from Troy, and apparently the Ynglinga Saga portrays them as humans with magic powers. And considered how Odin practices magic considered unmanly and feminine and he is also a shapeshifter, I really wonder why Queer activists use Loki today and not Odin.
