Notes:
(1) Perhaps Harry's grown too used to magic. He's fine charging headlong into danger, but a short swim in cold water totally freaks him out. Who is he? Film-Ron?
(2) "Harry had long since learned that bangs and smoke were more often the marks of ineptitude than expertise."
- I wonder if he's referring to Seamus, who's gimmick is he often accidentally blows things up?

Notes:
(1) '"Snape!" ejaculated Slughorn, who looked the most shaken, pale
and sweating. "Snape! I taught him! I thought I knew him!"'
- I sincerely hope that "ejaculated" means something different in British English.
(2) Fleur snatches ointment from Molly and takes over dabbing Bill. Ah, the symbolic passing of the ointment.
(3) Six down, one to go. I'll see you next book!

Notes:
(1) Kicking another wizard's wand must be akin to spitting in their face. At least Snape didn't snap Harry's in half.
(2) Gee, I haven't heard of the Hand of Glory since Book Two. That's a deep call back.
(3) Fleur: "You thought I would not weesh to marry him? ... What do I care how he looks? I am good-looking enough for both of us, I theenk!
- Haha! Nice one, Fleur.

Notes:
(1) On one hand, Harry should be less repetitive with spells. Petrificus Totalus over and over gets boring. On the other hand, if it works, why change?
(2) '"DON’T —" screamed Snape, and his face was suddenly demented, inhuman ... "CALL ME COWARD!"'
- A regular Marty McFly right there: "Nobody. Calls me. Chicken!"
(3) "I, the Half-Blood Prince!"
- Like "I, Claudius"?

(1) Amycus calls Dumbledore "Dumby." I imagine a green stick of plasticine with a horse named Pokey.
(2) Fenrir: “I wouldn’t want to miss a trip to Hogwarts ... Not when there are throats to be ripped out... Delicious, delicious.”
- Can werewolves be cannibals? Or does it only count in human form?
(3) "Severus... please."
- Ah... reminds me of many a chatroom debate.

(1) Malfoy: "He’s a double agent, you stupid old man, he isn’t working for you."
Dumbledore: "We must agree to differ on that, Draco. It so happens that I trust Professor Snape."
- I use "agree to disagree" a lot too.
(2) Malfoy: "I got the idea... from the Mudblood Granger."
Dumbledore: "Please do not use that offensive word in front of me."
- Total boss to the end.

(1) Draco disarms Dumbledore... the significance of which is yet to be known. I love how Rowling seeds plot points in deep cuts.
(2) Dumbledore: "Killing is not nearly as easy as the innocent believe... So tell me, while we wait for your friends... how did you smuggle them in here?"
- The old "I'm going to die anyway, so tell me your plan" trick! Bond would be proud.

(1) Harry needs blood to open the archway. Luckily, he was already cut whilst fighting Inferi. Even zombies have a silver lining.
(2) '"It’s going to be all right, sir," Harry said over and over again ... "Don’t worry..."
"I am not worried, Harry," said Dumbledore, his voice a little stronger despite the freezing water. "I am with you."'
- Hits me right in the feels.

Notes:
(1) How is Harry shocked that blood magic is a thing? Voldemort was revived by his blood!
(2) Dumbldore: "You are underage and unqualified. Voldemort would never have expected a sixteen-year-old to reach this place: I think it unlikely that your powers will register compared to mine."
- So... Harry should be glad the alarm can't detect his negligible amount of magic.

(1) Ginny: "All Romilda Vane does is ask me if it’s true you’ve got a hippogriff tattooed across your chest ... I told her it’s a Hungarian Horntail ... Much more macho."
- Harry's already kinda got a lightning bolt tattoo, and on his face too! I'd guess that's be even more macho.
(2) "Rage and resentment fought shock and excitement."
- Fight it! Angst was so Book 5.

- Wasn't that an Elvis song? No, wait, that was "A Little Less Conversation."
(2) Harry's mind: "She’s Ron’s sister. But she’s ditched Dean! She’s still Ron’s sister. I’m his best mate! That’ll make it worse. If I talked to him first — He’d hit you. What if I don’t care? He’s your best mate!"

Yeah, I think he did it once or twice in the first book and they made it a running gag in the films. It's just when I think of bangs and smoke in this universe I think of Seamus and his besooted face :)

lucy Ü "who is he? film ron?" ahahaha that was fuuunnyyy

I have a soft spot for film-Ron, even though he's a total departure from book-Ron and a sort of corruption of character.

Sophia I never realised the face Harry made in that Prisoner of Azkaban scene. It's both hilarious and a little creepy!

Jayson Sophia wrote: "I never realised the face Harry made in that Prisoner of Azkaban scene. It's both hilarious and a little creepy!"

I hadn't paid much attention to it too until now. Mostly, the focus is on Ron and the face he's making. But you're right! If you just look at Harry, it does look both creepy and hilarious. Totally not the face to make when staring down a werewolf lol :)

I know! It's so weird how you could've watched something so many times but until it's specifically singled out, like this two second clip, you don't notice it at all.

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot just going through gifs for updates. I think my favorite discovery was that the Beauxbaton students were dancing the Macarena during the start of the final task in Goblet of Fire... also the weird male cheerleader on the right in that scene :)

Hahaha I had never noticed either of those before! 😂 The real question now becomes; who came up with the Macarena first? Wizards of Muggles??

Jayson Sophia wrote: "Hahaha I had never noticed either of those before! 😂 The real question now becomes; who came up with the Macarena first? Wizards of Muggles??"

In book continuity, it would have to be Wizards. Goblet of Fire is set in 1994/1995, the Macarena wasn't a thing until 1996.

Right! The timing of the books has always confused me, having come from watching the films first.

Jayson Sophia wrote: "Right! The timing of the books has always confused me, having come from watching the films first."

Yeah, I think because the first book was written, or at least started to be written, in 1991, it was set in 1991. That makes enough sense. It took several years after that before the book was published, so there's a significant gap. The films being much later than that, I think just set everything in the present. It is very easy to date the books, though. Book 1 starts in 1991, Book 2 is 1992, Book 3 is 1993, etc.

It does make sense when written out like that. I just have to remind my brain not to revert to the film years when thinking about certain events lol

Jayson Sophia wrote: "It does make sense when written out like that. I just have to remind my brain not to revert to the film years when thinking about certain events lol"

Yeah, that's going to be difficult since the films are our primary source of visual reference. It does help that the books are more or less timeless, though there are occasional references to Playstations, wristwatches and televisions sets that date it.

Very true! On the flip side, those reference are a little time capsule into Muggle life for future readers :)

Jayson Sophia wrote: "Very true! On the flip side, those reference are a little time capsule into Muggle life for future readers :)"

Yes, that's true. I often find one of the most interesting aspects of books are the reflection of the period they're set it. I enjoy it a lot more when it's a contemporary story from the past as opposed to a recent story set in the past. I figure if Harry Potter was written today, but set in the past, it would try way too hard to get across the time period, and would feel inauthentic.

Sophia Jayson wrote: "Yes, that's true. I often find one of the most interesting aspects of books are the reflection of the period they're set it. I enjoy it a lot more when it's a contemporary story from the past as opposed to..."

Definitely! That's why I enjoy the older comics. Seeing into that time, the way people dressed and the technology that was available is so fascinating to me.

I agree 100%. The great thing about Harry Potter is that so little time is set where the current time's technology is present so really, it could be rewritten to be set in any time period. (Hope that made sense 🙃)

I get what you're saying. Basically, modern technology is limited to the Dursley's and some parts of Deathly Hallows when they're on the run. I think the only piece of Muggle technology at Hogwarts are wristwatches, which might be the only confusing thing, and only to the newest generation of readers. They'd be like, "People wore bracelets with a clock on it?"

Haha exactly! Although, wearing watches has become more of a fashion statement so maybe they'll recognize it?

Jayson Sophia wrote: "Haha exactly! Although, wearing watches has become more of a fashion statement so maybe they'll recognize it?"

Perhaps so. It might be something hipsters wear to look ironic or anachronistic. Alternatively, it might come back into fashion. It used to be people used to keep timepieces in their pockets and purses, then people wore them on their wrists. Now we're back to people checking the time from pockets and purses again, except this time the timepieces are phones. Going back to wrists is the next stage in the pattern :)

Audrey I noticed the Macarena dance the first time I saw it but never noticed Harry's face in that other clip. Usually watching Ron's.

Harry is born in 1980, yes.

I believe so, since his eleventh birthday was in 1991.

And why not? There are some nice looking watches out there!
Not to mention all the 'smart watches' floating around.

Yeah, I agree. Personally, I don't think smart watches caught on like everyone thought they would. There was a lot of hype, and it seemed like the hot thing for like a minute, but now I don't hear anything about them anymore. I suppose the first generation of anything are always rife with problems. It's usually once things are ironed out that things gain traction. I predict "smart watches" might have a big resurgence.

Audrey There are wind-up mechanical watches that should be compatible with magic. I am seeing a lot of smart watches around.

Jayson Audrey wrote: "There are wind-up mechanical watches that should be compatible with magic. I am seeing a lot of smart watches around."

That's interesting. It might be a regional thing, because I've not seen any of late.

Sophia Jayson wrote: "That's interesting. It might be a regional thing, because I've not seen any of late."

It must be. I know I've seen a lot more smart watches being used than regular watches!

Jayson Sophia wrote: "It must be. I know I've seen a lot more smart watches being used than regular watches!"

Oh, I guess I've to pay more attention to people's wrists now. lol. At least the newer generation will be used to people wearing clocks on their arm again 😁
