"My children will be raised with religion."
"What kind? Baptist?"
"No. Mama, for Christ's sake, Tish happens to be Protestant—"

Uh... Baptist *is* Protestant.

Also, this is Catherine trying to convince her oldest son to convert his fiancée to Catholicism, because everything must be done her way because she's a CONTROL FREAK.

We've finally come full circle to when Catherine took a jaunt to a "fat farm" in Arizona without telling a single person. Her family has finally noticed her missing.

The anxiety of Catherine's whereabouts during the interim of those days was only to be compared with the sinking of the Titanic.

At times like these I genuinely can't tell if the author is being serious or is in on the farce.

Catherine: I'm going to open a fancy boutique!
Dominic: She must be going through menopause.

Cute Guy: *walks into a bar*
Gina Maria: !!!!
Dominic: You're acting weird, let's go back to the hotel.
Gina Maria: NOOOO.
Catherine: Don't worry, it's fine. Better pay the check, Dominic.

And from the sound in her voice and the wink in her left eye, he knew Gina Maria must be having her period.

END SCENE.

Me: wat

*rereads sentence* Ah yes, a wink in the LEFT eye. Now I understand.

I'm halfway through the book and it just seems so mundane now. The first quarter was all over the place so I'm a bit disappointed.

Every time it's too early for breakfast I, like Catherine, eat a snack of sardines with crackers, cubes of cheese, and Danish cookies dunked in cognac. I then spend the next few minutes being SUPER defensive about this decision (in my mind) because I gave so much to my husband and seven famous children. And then I forget all about sardines because I start having flashbacks of my troubled marriage.

Catherine had one remarkable quality and that was to make emotional transitions rapidly.

Oof, that's an understatement. I'm pretty sure she's had a mood swing on every single page so far.

Buddy read with Nenia!

The first 8 pages are absolutely bananas, as in "Who writes like this?" The heroine is laying in her luxurious bed lamenting her richness and mentioning her seven famous children and that time she met her now-husband and five seconds later they decided to get married.

Mir Lol, guess the author wasn't religious?

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ Lol guess not! Or maybe she was Catholic, like the main characters, and anything other than that isn't worth knowing about.

Mir I would expect a Catholic to lump all non-Catholic Christians into "Protestant".

I'm afraid wanting the wife to convert is not unusual. Lots of people I knew in college changed religions for marriage! And my atheist roommate who married a Catholic received a book from his family about how to raise Catholic children, with a note begging her not to drag her husband and children to Hell with her.

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ Yeah, they're serious about converting. Mormons too. As far as I know most Protestant religions aren't *quite* that serious about it, but I suppose it depends on your family or the region.

message 5: by Mir (new)

Mir I think a lot of Protestants are into conversion. Jehovah's Witnesses, 7th Day Adventists, etc. But yeah, I think the more mainstream sects consider being Protestant good enough and don't try to convert one another from say, Lutheran to Calvinist.

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ Good point, I forgot about them. I don't know much about those ones actually.

Mir You don't get a lot of door to door missionaries in Vegas?

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ No, mostly just Mormons if any. I've had encounters with JWs where I'm at the park with my kids and they just show up and start talking to me. So weird. One time my car was dead and I cut them off before they could get into their spiel and asked for a jump lol.

Mere Rain Lol, the most use anyone has ever gotten from them, probably.

Lol, that's certainly true for me!

Mir One of my theology profs told us he suckered some Mormon boys into helping paint his house while he argued with them about religion.
