Ch. 4 The yellow-brick road became uneven. There were gaps that tripped the scarecrow and he fell. Toto fell in them. They kept up a good sense of humor. There were fewer farms and the ones that they did see were in poor shape. They stopped for lunch. The scarecrow didn’t eat because he doesn’t have a hole and, if he did, straw falls out. Dorothy eats her bread and he asks her about Kansas. It sounds too gray to him.

First, she lost her wolves (ahem, Jadis) and now she’s lost her crows. She blows on her silver whistle and a swarm of black bees show up. She sends them to the group. Scarecrow says to cover Dorothy, Toto, and the lion with the straw. The only thing to sting is the tinman and one bee after another breaks its stinger on him and they die. Her only choice now is to tie up the lion and enslave the others.

When the crow arrives, the scarecrow scares many of them, but the king is skeptical and said he would peck out his eyes. The scarecrow caught it and twisted its neck. Every time one comes at him he catches it and twists its neck. Guess how many crows he killed. Forty!!! All of his friend stayed on the ground with their faces turned down to avoid getting their eyes pecked. Again, the wicked witch is furious.

The scarecrow and tinman are wide awake, the latter stands poised to lop off heads. He ends up killing 40 wolves (he can’t even help himself from Biblical numbers). It’s amazing that Dorothy did not wake up and, in the morning, she thanks the tinman and scarecrow for saving her. The witch sees what happened to her wolves and she loses her mind. She blows her silver whistle and a flock of crows darkens the sky.

Dorothy is shocked that her dress is white as is Toto’s bow. They walk to the west. There are no farms and the land is barren and untilled. The weather is hot and dry. They fall asleep, The witch has on eye that works like a telescope and she sees them sleeping. She blows on her silver whistle to call her wolves and send them to tear them up because none of them are fit to be slaves. The wolves find the four.

Ch. 12 The green soldier escorts them to the gate. The guardian of the gate unlock their glasses and put them in the locked box. They ask about the road to the Wicked Witch of the West and are told there is none but to keep the setting sun to their west. When they get to the country, the winkies will come and get them to make them her slaves. But the four are optimistic as always.

When the four gather, they all mourn that they cannot have what they wish. After the pity party is over, the lion suggests they go to the land of the winkies and kill the witch. They all make excuses based on their deficits. They get themselves cleaned up and repaired. The next morning they have a hearty breakfast and Dorothy fills her basket. Then they go.

Instead of a head, the scarecrow sees a beautiful woman (so the tinman is next). The same sort of thing happens; the requirement is for the scarecrow to kill the witch. Actually, it doesn’t matter who kills the witch as long as someone does it. The same thing happens with the tinman but he sees a rhinocerous and the lion sees a ball of fire. In each case, the wizard asks for the death of th wicked witch of the esat.

He asks what she wants and she tells him. He says that nobody gts anything for free and she’ll have to kill the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy cries because her house killed the witch, not her. She’s never killed anything in her life. The wizard says that he will not help her until the witch is dead. She meets the others and gives them a debrief. The next morning is the scarecrow (the head is the cue).

The ladies and gentlemen of the court dress elegantly. They never see oz so they just all stand there and gossip. At first, the wizard was angry until he heard about her silver shoes and the kiss on her forehead. She walks in alone and sees a ginormous head sitting on a throne, all green. He calls himself Oz the Great and Terrible so Dorothy calls herself the Small and Meek. He asks about her shoes and the kiss.

Dorothy’s room is the nicest place she has ever stayed. Toto is with her. The others are take to their own rooms. The luxuries are wasted on the scarecrow who stands stupidly and watches a spider spine a web all night. The tinman and the lion each sleep on their own bed in their own room. After breakfast the next morning, Dorothy puts on a lovely green dress and a green bow on Toto. They are taken to see the wizard.
