Hunter is the most obnoxious narrator there is. I get being in high school fucking sucks, probably especially for a trans kid, but dude is the biggest pushover I’ve ever seen and doesn’t seem to appreciate some luck he’s had in his life. Dude needs to turn on some Morrisey and cut this shit out.

I was hoping to finish this last weekend when the weather was still cold, but finishing while we drive through the mountains is fitting in its own right (not that the Smokies compare much to the Himalayas).

Krakauer really excels at building suspense. Also, a few of these high-altitude ailments seem a lot like how I feel when my blood sugar crashes.

The buildup is obviously necessary and entertaining enough, but I am eager to get to the disaster itself.

I get he's struggling with feeling like an outsider for being gay, but his obsession with being popular is so pedestrian that it's making me like him even less.

So far this is 100% what I expected, given the quality of the TV show.

Not really liking this yet: reminds me a lot of The Boyhood of Cain, and I wasn't a fan of that one. But it's not long so I might stick it out, we'll see.

IDK, maybe the narrator wouldn't dislike bottoming so much if he stopped insisting you only need spit.

It’s been a while since I read a book that so accurately portrays being 12 and feeling that being gay means there is something desperately wrong with you.

Enjoying this one so far.

Sometimes I'm really connecting with this, and other times the prose is so poetic that it's pulling me out.
