I can't recall the last time I started reading a book and felt so uncomfortable about the writing. It's not bad. It's just...simple?
When people say "scrumming" instead of "fucking" I don't really mind, but then they also say "hell" and "goddamn", and this is where questions start to arise.

This isn't easy, reading this one. The reasons I can name right off the bat: the wrong time (I mean, I'd like to think it could have gone better in winter), the style (takes a bit to get used to, and still jars me here and there), the feeling that the book is exactly about what I think it is about.

This is the book that makes me think back on the teenage days when an adventure like that would have thrilled me... and I am truly as thrilled now as I would have been then. It is amazing to be taken back to your other self of years past yet not through something familiar and revisited but entirely new and exciting.

I don't know why I don't find it captivating. And I am not fervently expecting it to captivate me later or impress with the ending; I'll be glad if it does, but so far it's just been giving me slight melancholy.

I think I love it. The book has a great mixture of Baldursgatelike adventuring (I came late to D&D party, started with CRPGs), complete with numerous gods that impart their powers on their followers, and horrible, horrible things deep below.

All right, the party's gathered and on its way through travelling quests to the very scary main one. Have you ever wondered how all those adventurers really fare in ancient crypts and forgotten temples? Here's the right book.

More than halfway into the book I found myself captivated by the story. So much, in fact, that all the little things like the famous pronoun or the odd, slightly dry narrative, seem to go with it perfectly.

Um...I'm reading this right after "The Blade Itself". I wish it could explain why I am not feeling strongly about the events right away. Here's hoping things will get more interesting once we're actually in the Blighted City. Or that by that time I'll invest enough into the book to take a prolonged break.
