No lush descriptions leave so much to one's imagination, and I think it's one of the reasons I've been instantly sucked into this book. It kind of reminds me of Amos Tutuola's works: straight to business, yet the path is far from being straight, and it turns and bends and weaves itself into something you follow eagerly.

It's not the first book, but I don't really mind.

I've read about Duane's wizards before (a long time ago it was, and not in English), so I am a bit familiar with her universe. And I enjoy reading about the cats' view on it! Part of the book feels like a fairy-tale, yet another part is (surprise!) pleasantly mature, and they are mixed very well. Also, great to meet Nita and Kit! I'm definitely going back to their stories!

I don't like time. I consider time travel to be one of the most difficult themes. There usually is an unavoidable paradox. Because time travel itself should be avoided. I fear some dreadful truth to be revealed soon (along other dreadful things and events that have so far transpired), some matter of irreversibility. It's all this books makes me think of: time, life, and what we make of it.

Third person again. I see why now, I'm happy with it (there's logic!). Not the book to read at night, and not only because of some truly disturbing scenes, but because of thoughts it brings. Thoughts of despair, futility, loss.
The horror. The horror.

At some point the narrative changes from the third person to the first person. I...er...I still like the third person more. Or is it simply a habit? Soemtimes it feels more like a leftover from my childhood days when almost every book was in the third person. Well, this story loses nothing from this change of perspective and continues to hit my feelings like a truck.

Great beginning. Gripping. Feels like a good movie could be made...what do you know, the rights to the book were acquired by Fox months ago before it was even published. So far it's giving me what I want: a heroine with a life of her own, murder investigation, eerie and disturbing images.
