Ok. The scenes with the children playing in the castle while the men prepare to destroy it. The little girl waking up prattling and saying good morning to her feet. The little boys exploring the bugs and the birds as though nothing is going on around them. The girl being woken by the sound of a cannon and saying “boom” then going back to sleep.
Don’t do this to me again, Victor Hugo, I’ll be sad for a week.

I’ve seen the documentary “The Death Of Yugoslavia” at least twice, it was a masterclass in presenting a complex and terrible series of events too recent to even call history, but with deep roots. It’s probably only because of that film that I’m opening a 700 page book about the Balkans with enthusiasm rather than reluctance.

I remember liking the movie but I don’t remember how it played out, which I’m glad of right now. I don’t know if there is any redemption in store for the malefactor of the story, but at this point I’m doubting if there is any for the narrator, she’s uh pretty unpleasant.
