An avocado sitting in a bin at the grocery store is thus biology in a time wrap. It's suited for a world that no longer exists. The fruit of the avocado is an ecological anachronism. Its missing partners are the ghosts of evolution.

For me, the most ironic token of that moment in history is the plaque signed by president Nixon that Apollo took to the moon. It reads: "We came in peace for all mankind." As the USA was dropping 7 1/2 megatons of conventional explosives on small nations in southeast Asia, we congratulated ourselves on our humanity. We would harm no one on a lifeless rock.

I wish Sagan was alive in Trump's America :-)

It's entertaining to read Sagan dissecting scriptures and Catholic Church over Galileo's condemnation by them.

Quite a humbling reading, contrary to what religions preach Sagan reminds us how insignificant we are in the vast scheme of the universe. I think religions, especially man centric religions really did a disservice to our progress as a species!

Jack's insistent desire to test his worthiness all through his life is curious. I guess the early messages he got in life were not particularly empowering! I see unusual sensitivity in him. All he wanted to know was "if I do this bad thing will my parents stop loving me?" Testing limits's natural part of early childhood but in a grown up, it's sad because he should have figured out it all in his childhood itself.

At the near end of this book I realize that sorry is a favorite word in some families. But I should have noted how many times had their father said the magical word! I don't remember a single instance, though I might have been careless. I guess being a parent relinquishes the right to say sorry :-/ it's a bit of playing God on someone under your care, hmm?

The conversation between Reverend and his son is one of the most tedious and unnatural ones I have ever heard!

I think we can know our children only to the extent we know ourselves! We try to be the parents we wanted but then it might not be enough for our children!
