The closer I get to the end, the slower I read. It’s so sad, getting so close to this vibrant family and seeing the old parents - to whom we’re now REALLY attached - so close to their end!

WOW! What a read. DON’T be fooled by the Cheap Price. It’s FANTABULOUS!

Jasmine’s story is so heart-stabbingly touching, but in the pleasant manner of the radiance of late childhood - now darkened by the shadow of the Syrian War. While this young girl swoons at American Pop Songs and Movies, she never realizes she will soon be a citizen of that faraway land, when the flames of pitched battle have totally engulfed her placid land! GREAT read.

Duality. Who nowadays isn’t plagued by it? Yet European writers at the beginning of our age - Mann, Rilke, Valéry and Gide - bridged that duality with their WAKING DREAMS. There was little duality in their work - especially, for me, in this one - and they really KNEW THEIR OWN IDENTITY, HOLISTICALLY. As DREAM!

INCREDIBLY fine novel.

Imagine: you are settled into the trivial routine of the Edwardian European Gentry more than a century ago, in a luxurious Alpine TB Sanatorium. Time drifts slowly by in wispy flashes, and then seems to stand still in the pristine dry mountain air. You live for the day: THIS is the long, gently ruminative tale of one young man’s Coming of Age.

And what IMMENSE Courage. A young squadron leader hits enemy flak, bails out, and immediately falls into brutal enemy hands for Five Years of incommunicable inhumanity - and though armed only with his indelibly remembered Epictetus follows his Little Way of Stoicism to freedom. Thanks to Tg for this!

Absolutely, heart-tuggingly PURE WRITING!

In the second part of this book, von Balthazar’s “christologisation” of Hell (my own unwieldy neologism) is contrasted with the Pope Emeritus’ view (in his capacity as theologian) which appears to give Hope the upper hand throughout the Descent.

The theologian Hans Urs von Balthazar came into the public eye during John Paul II’s papacy. Pitstick contrasts his views with those more prevalent now, on the Descent into Hell after the Crucifixion.

As I plunge more deeply into this quiet emotional rollercoaster of a read, I find myself living less as a reader and more as a person to whom similar situations have occurred - it is therefore becoming to me self-revelatory, as all truly great books must be!

A deeply touching family memoir!

I can’t remember laughing and sighing so much with a new book - so much so that I can’t stop reading (though my weak eyes say WHOA)!

WONDERFUL! For Anyone who at one time has acted as caregiver for their parents. A deeply felt, warmly intelligent and revealingly human book. Cause we’re ALL heading towards old age, like it or not!

This “reading” of a justly acclaimed bestseller is simply a Note to Myself as reminder to buy it tomorrow, when my credit card daily max starts again - with MANY thanks to my wonderful GR friend, Maria Olga!

The premise that I infer to be Mr Calleja’s intention - i.e., the rich silent wisdom, beyond words in its profundity, of our Holy Mother - is not new to me. For I inferred it myself in contemplation on the Sorrowful Mother several months ago, when COVID-19 hit us all!
