This book cuts deep. It hurts us - yet at the same time heals us - to read of Buechner's anguish at the centre of the slow, tragic and ineluctable passage of time, from the vantage point of midage. There is nowhere to relax in this book, though it invariably rewards our attention. Four stars, at the very least!
