Okay, I’m giving Carmel literally zero percent chance of making it out of this book alive. A precedent was set in Eyes of Prey where one of the antagonists makes it out alive and free, but since then all of the antagonists have either been incarcerated or straight up died violently. So Carmel aside, I’m hoping Rinker makes it out of this one. You just cannot stop yourself from rooting for her.

These books are hardly about funny things, but they seem to get funnier as we go along. The ridiculous banter between Lucas’ band of cops is impossible not to chuckle at.

Rinker might be the the first legitimately likable Davenport antagonist of the series. I mean, she’s a reprehensible human being and nothing less than a menace to society, but I still find myself grinning at her scenes with Carmel.

I know Alia’s creepy as shit, but I genuinely feel bad for her. Seeing Abomination from the inside is hellish.

Trying again to pick up the ancient Dune campaign in hopes of a successful conclusion. The characters are instantly captivating as always: loyal but conflicted Stilgar and, uh, utterly-inscrutable-despite-lengthy-internal-monologues everyone else? Even pissy asides between the twins and Alia are captivating.

I’m kind of thrilled that the call from Jan is the most exciting thing that’s happened in this book. It’s kind of a literal and stylistic return to the books before the psycho killer trilogy that started with Boneyard. The last one wore me out...

Matt’s hardly thought about the sauce in this one. I think the combination of Elaine and heinous murder plots are doing well at keeping him away from booze thoughts. Block continues the addiction theme with Peter’s character even though he’s into junk and not liquor. Surprised it took this long for a recurring junkie character to show up!

The dated-as-hell thirty pages of early 90s phone hacking shit didn’t even bother me because of the dialogue, characters and just good credit the series has built up with me.

The antagonists in this book have gotten SO much worse since Boneyard. There’s a dude on here that insists that Block had a mental breakdown around this period, which is understandable but goofy.

Glowing with creepy fanboy glee over this one. I was a little wary about bringing the two together so early in Ballard’s existence but you can’t lose putting these two awkward, brilliant motherfuckers together. Whoever did this one is so fucked!

The Straub influence is strong on this one, dude just wrote fuckin’ 25 pages on the history of this fictional town. I don’t think there’s a single Straub out there that doesn’t include a long-ass fictional town history.

This is one of Uncle Stephen’s more maligned books, even by himself. I’m not seeing why so far! Sure it’s long-winded but that’s hardly out of the norm for the author. I’ve always liked his “lost weekend” stuff while he was constantly fucked up. IT, Misery, Talisman, Pet Sematary, Drawing of the Three...all great.

So this is Slade’s homage to Agatha Christie...probably be enjoying it even more if I knew anything more than fuck all about the lady. I really don’t get why these aren’t more popular! They combine hardcore procedural and horror in such a unique way.

So Lucas is a world class ladykiller, expert marksman, genius designer of tabletop games, brilliant detective, hugely successful gambler, and a flippant dismisser of authority figures even though he’s a cop. Plus he’s an asshole. Am I really supposed to believe/like this character and stick with him through like 800 books?
