The subplot with Shurq Elalle struggling to retain a sex life after drowning is hilariously gross and weird.

Might have to take back my statement regarding Memories of Ice as having the best Malazan prologue...this one was ridiculously epic as well. Very excited to read this one again as I remember loving the contrast and conflict between the Edur and Letherii cultures.

For some reason I thought Mappo and Icarium were in this, which they're apparently not. Sucks. That is the tragic bromance to end all tragic bromances. It's also noteworthy that most fantasy series have named weapons, but of course Erikson one-ups this by having a sword that has different names depending on the bearer and their moods.

Karsa, Bairoth and Delum’s rampage down from the Laederon Plateau is like the most nightmarish road trip buddy movie ever. It’s kind of like Natural Born Killers, except instead of Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis shooting hicks it’s three giant motherfuckers with huge wooden swords raping, reaving and killing among the “children” (humans.) Not to mention fucking with powerful buried shit they shouldn’t be.

I’ve been really excited to get to the novel-length Karsa introduction! Love this part.

Back at it! I absolutely refuse to not finish this series by year’s end. Of the many parts of this that went over my head the first time, the part where Coll encounters the Knight of High House Death was the most nerdgasm-inducing.

Ugh...”Degradation Rites” has to be the worst story in this whole book. Yeah, I really wanna hear about Dr. Tachyon and fucking Brain Trust’s romantic relationship and not about new and cool and bizarre Wild Cards. Thanks, Melinda Snodgrass.

Re-reading this because I wanna get further into the series and forgot some shit already...the Four Aces stories are still aggressively boring. Worst super-team EVER. Thankfully Zelazny’s Sleeper and GRRM’s own Great and Powerful Turtle remain supercool.

Frenchy is one of those characters that is an incorrigible douche but only manages to liven up the narrative because of that. The scene where Earl screams at him for being a racist ass was so good.

Zero plot and characterization (other than the protagonist) but who gives a shit, this is one of the most fun cops and robbers novels I’ve ever read. I really, really want to shoot a Thompson now.

This one doesn’t seem to have anywhere near as many brilliantly cheap thrills as Dirty White Boys and the gun porn is a little over my head and boring but the pure action-thriller parts are as good as it gets. The movie looks awful.

Methinks Lord Simmons may be indulging a bit too much with the rock-climbing porn, but detail-obsessive tangents are a hallmark of the author so this is par for the course.

The dragons in this series have the giant, scary, and actually wild feeling that the dragons from Martin's stuff do, but with these books it's like...imagine if Drogon fucked around and dismembered some kid, but instead of kinda putting up with it a warrior-priest in full middle ages armor on a huge destrier buries a lance in its head.
