George McClellan is one of the most exasperating figures in history I've ever read about. I can't imagine the war wouldn't have ended sooner had Grant not been given the chance to get at Lee earlier than he did.

It'll be interesting to see how Follett depicts the Anarchy, specifically Maude and Stephen's war--my other experience with it was Penman's very pro-Maude novel When Christ and His Saints Slept.

Esslemont's writing is noticeably worse than Erikson's and there's some annoying inconsistencies...but the Crimson Guard are neat.
