The Civil War, Vol. 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville
George McClellan is one of the most exasperating figures in history I've ever read about. I can't imagine the war wouldn't have ended sooner had Grant not been given the chance to get at Lee earlier than he did.

It'll be interesting to see how Follett depicts the Anarchy, specifically Maude and Stephen's war--my other experience with it was Penman's very pro-Maude novel When Christ and His Saints Slept.

Yeah...I'm probably gonna give up on this one soon. Esslemont kinda sucks.

Giving this new True Detective program a shot...I usually can't stand Matt McCoughnahey but he's going straight for the darkness on this one.

Esslemont's writing is noticeably worse than Erikson's and there's some annoying inconsistencies...but the Crimson Guard are neat.

Very interesting seeing Cornwell out of his usual English comfort zone, but if the setting is unfamiliar the reliably well-researched style is the same. I love his descriptions of Richmond.

On a Sharpe TV movie marathon. Pete Postlethwaite is seriously brilliant as Hakeswill. So vile...

I really should not have used this as my "at work" book...I'm never more than like 75% sure I know what the hell is going on in this book.

You get one more shot, Esslemont. And you're not helping your case by naming one of the main characters fucking KYLE! Honestly, how ridiculous is that in a series where people are named stuff like Corabb Bhilan Thenu'alas, Laseen, Anomander Rake, or Trull Sengar...Kyle.

The cover looks like a still from a cutscene from a mid-to-late 90s low budget strategy game. A great start!

My brain refuses to let me put the book down at this point. Only hard part after this is whether to read Reaper's Gale or Return of the Crimson Guard next. Google doesn't want to give me a straight answer, apparently.

The cosplay bullshit on the cover is embarrassing and completely inappropriate. The other editions aren't much better but this is horrible.

So there was a territory called Arizona that existed in New Mexico created by a Confederate Texan general that existed until he had his ass kicked by Coloradans? That's...really confusing and awesome.

The Bonehunters (Malazan Book of the Fallen, #6)
"Children would chase lame dogs down the alleys, and those they cornered they would stone to death whilst shrieking the goddess's name. Convicted criminals sentenced to execution would have their skins publicly flailed, their long-bones broken, then the hapless victims would be flung into pits aswarm with cartoon beetles and red fireworms that would devour them over the course of four or five days." Fun!

Protagonist and girlfriend make out next to a field of freshly slain men and are cheered on by a group of onlooking women and children. What the hell?

Ugh...Flint insisting on every American in his book being their own version of Captain America is annoying. It'd be interesting to see a group break away and fight on the side of the...bad Germans? This is such a confusing time period I don't even know who the bad guys are. The HRE???
