The Rats in the Walls has to be one of the creepiest things I've ever read.

Sharpe is chased through the wetlands by a bunch of richboy Danish nobles and smashes one of their jaws with a rock. One of the most socio-politically active men I've read about.

I love these reissued covers, but my book OCD is shrieking wildly at the fact that the rest of the books in the series I own aren't in this edition.

My first encounter with a fictional Alexander. I also own Mary Renault's Fire From Heaven but I read and really liked Gates of Fire so I'll start with this one.

I need something a bit lighter than the tomes I've been reading. Saw this and it seemed like a good choice.

"Should we split up?" Why do these people even consider this? Come to think of it, Cabin in the Woods had a funny take on what would motivate a group of people in scary situations to split up.

Clavell is really, really good at writing what must go on in a leader like Toranaga's head. As ruthless as he can be, I just have to admire his skill at strategy and manipulation. Wish I could have seen him in action in the invasion of Korea.

Yeah, this book is utterly creepy. 80 pages into the story and I feel the need for a psychic enema.

The levity of the dance scene was nice after the intensity of Blackthorne's introduction to Japan.

We get it, Uncle Bernie. You like skinny women. I think I'd die of shock if any Cornwellian love interest wasn't an emaciated black-haired woman.

Caesar is born: "He was long and consequently weighed somewhat more than he looked to weigh; he was very strong; he was solemn and quiet, not prone to wailing; his hair was so fair it was practically invisible, though on close examination he actually had quite a lot of it; and his eyes from birth were a pale greenish-blue, ringed around with a band of blue so dark it was almost black."

I really wish that politicians talked like Scaurus today. Open hostility, shouting, name-calling...the man is a charmed.

Caepio's pride and stupidity are unbelievable. Over a hundred thousand Roman corpses litter the field because one guy didn't want to share a camp with a Pleb general. You couldn't make this stuff up. If he's not immediately killed for treason I will be disappointed in history.

Sweet, nerdy detail. Who would have thought I would enjoy a multi-page description of a particular Roman apartment building?

A really fascinating view of the Jugurthine war. This really makes it seem like it was just a means for Metellus to stay governor and get richer. Kinda like Caesar and the Gallic wars, I guess.
