This book is almost over and we're only now learning who the nightingale from the title is.

I adore this book already. It's like Good Omens with more heart.

I'm digging the atmosphere of this book, but I don't really care about the characters or plot

The reveal about Kali's mom was also terribly obvious.

Also obvious: the vampire reveal. And the line "We prefer the term Lonely Ones because we're meant to come in pairs" makes the opposite of sense.

I feel like these characters are way too surprised by the reveal that the Chimera biomedical company is splicing together monster hybrids. Was the name not a dead giveaway?

So I've learned to lower my expectations for Agatha Christie's lesser-known works, but this one is literally making me laugh out loud. It's the perfect sort of droll.

At some point, I probably need to admit that no other Saul Bellow book is ever going to live up to Seize the Day for me.

SPACE LINGUISTICS

It feels like this book is turning into a Twilight sort of paranormal romance, and I'm losing interest. I liked it a lot better when it was just about a group of teenage girls trying to kill a chupacabra.

"He felt the devil twisting his tail and pretended it was the angels smiling on him."

"Mother died of cancer brought on by fretting." Yes. That's how that works, alright.

I feel like this world isn't different enough from ours, given that everyone's known supernatural creatures exist since Darwin's time.

This is far from the oldest book I've read, but it may be the oldest one I've read to drop so many F bombs.

This is the gay interracial love story that Gotham deserves.

"Like Nazis at a Ku Klux Klan rally, they were comfortable ideologically, but not in terms of corporate culture." What even is this book.

"Sometimes, luck belongs to children and madmen. That night, I felt we were both." God, I love this book.

"If you had known he'd cared, so would others. When you are a man, maybe you'll understand just how much that cost him. To not know you in order to keep you safe. To make his enemies ignore you." The foreshadowing / dramatic irony here is KILLING me.

"If ever I find the right woman, I'll want her to know I won't be looking at another. And I'll want to know all my children are mine." Womp womp, Burrich. Womp WOMP.

This was a favorite of mine in high school -- it's time to see if it's still as good as I remember.

This book is not getting any less weird as it goes along.

I think I read this around 2004, but I have zero memory of it and I'm pretty sure I never got around to the sequels.

This is an odd book, and I keep changing my mind as to whether it's a good one or not.

These character beats don't feel particularly well-motivated.
