This got heavy fast.

In general this is good, but I feel like Augie isn't badly as developed as the other characters. The tension building and developmental perspective work is excellent. The writing feels like it edges on being stream of consciousness, which really propels things.

Done! I particularly enjoyed the epilogue's efforts to put things into a larger historical context. All in all this has been a useful read.

The Mali chapter is interesting; it seems to really tie together the political threats of the earlier sections and finds some folks with good insights.

The chapter on Sierra Leone was about as depressing as expected.

And there's the corruption!

So much racism and cultural imperialism. It's strange seeing it in such a different cultural context.

I'm alleviatingy the author's ear for implied elements in the interviews, and candidness about things like human trafficking.

That's some terrifyingly efficient worker exploitation.

This should be an interesting perspective.

Done! I was impressed by the clever twists and dedication to pulpy humor. This was a lot of fun!

Done! This feels like it stopped in a weird place. I get that it's Ciri's first arc, but the larger story seems like it's still in Act I. I can see why they released The Last Wish as an intro, because this book doesn't do much with Geralt overall, and doesn't explain a lot of the background beyond letting you know Sodden was important and Nilfgaard is bad.
