Yes, I put the book aside for a few weeks, because I have a hard time imagining the events, liking the characters, ... The style isn't helping, but neither is the ADHD-shifting of focus between Miller and Holden: a chapter about Miller, one about Holden, back and forth. Why couldn't they write a few chapters about one or the other and then shift focus for a little while? Not much chance I'll read the other books.

Some nice old stories so far, although not all equally good, of course. Oh, and one eloquently written, which is not what I expected from Terry.

Hard to get into at first, then things get a little clearer. But either it's the enormous background that's troubling me or the writing style. Also, the constant switching between Holden and Miller (a chapter revolving around Holden, one around Miller, one around Holden, one around Miller, ...) doesn't help to keep an overview. :/
Some wrote this book reads very smoothly. Uh, no, it doesn't. You have to be focused.

Carp (shaman/najd) has more influence over Kerlew, Joboam & Heckram are like two cocks fighting over the same hen, Heckram loves Tillu (mutual?). Kari (daughter of herdlord Capiam) has become friends with Tillu, sort of protects her, too. And now, Kerlew is lost (thanks to Joboam?, who already can't stand the kid), but also lost in a mental way? Betrayed?

This one continues where The Reindeer People left off. I still fail to see why the publisher couldn't keep the two books together, as the first has 348 pages (my copy) and this one has 268 (my copy). Oh yes, marketing reasons, obviously.

More political intrigue rises to the surface (no pun intended). But you still have to remain attentive, as I feel that not everything is being shown or told. Then again, with only 191 pages instead of, in these modern times, at least three times as many...

Things are clearer now, about the setup, ex-tankers who escaped and try to survive. But in the meantime, politics still carry on the scam/fraud, playing vile games. Nicholas St. James, chosen president of the Tom Mix tank, is one of the latest escapees, reaches Cheyenne and learns about the real world and how the fake world is kept intact below.

Quite a smooth read until now. But it lacks background info, it's as if I'm thrown into the story without really knowing who's who, why what happened, etc. :/ I hope the rest of the story will fill those gaps, one way or another.
