I think Asimov wrote himself into a corner several times, then made stuff up to escape the consequences of his literary actions. This final twist, however, was still very good. The second book is definitely better than the first. Also has a surprisingly solid female lead, the lack of female characters in the first one bothered me.

It sounds like Asimov was making stuff up as he went in this second book. First one too, but here, even more so.
