There are six pages on the novel of a late 19th century socialist author. That's only one author.

It seems this book is one half history and one half literary review. That's not exaggerated. Icks goes on and on about the works of various "decadent" authors and even quotes their prosaic descriptions of Elagabalus' dress in verbatim.

Reading the excerpts from the contemporary and near-contemporary historians, I have a feeling that the author tried to craft a narrative independent of theirs, based on coins and circumstantial evidence mostly.

The military here isn't nearly as bad as in Vietnam, but still: They wasted thousands of pounds trying (and failing) to draw out Taliban fighters because they forgot it was the friday prayer. Still, overall, the military isn't drawn in a bad light here. Interesting contrast to Chickenhawk.
