I am assuming that the reason Kelsey is just so blah is that it makes it easier for younger girls to neatly insert themselves into the story in place of her...

Must all female heroines in YA books these days be twits? I don't know what it is about kids these days, but when I was younger (and more apt to read things like this) I appreciated a good, engaging story far more than something rife with romance. The story is interesting enough, but I find the romance-y stuff distracting and frankly, embarassing.

The illustrations! Swoon!

Very meh over this so far. Even though he writes with a lot of skill, I've never been able to set off the sense of blatant mimicry (of Tolkien in particular) I get when reading his books.
