I do adore a bit of righteous scathing and KSR serves it up well (p140)

Alexandra is starting The Deadly Sisterhood: Eight Princesses of the Italian Renaissance
Also the use of the term 'instinctive' to describe women's diplomatic abilities is problematic. So is a mother 'pestering' a potential benefactor on behalf of her son.

This book falls into the same trap as many books that want to discuss women in history fall into. That is, presumably because they want to set the context (that's the charitable reading), the book ends up being a general history of war etc with the women sometimes tacked on, or - best case - given more prominence than general histories do but they're still not the overwhelming focus. It's frustrating.

Some careless typos in this book are really annoying me.

I've read like six other books since I started this. Is that a sign?

Finished Bitterwood Bible (again). Now I'm going to read Sourdough (at last). Is it going to be bad that I'm going to a sourdough course on Sunday?

Alexandra is reading Soul Music (Discworld, #16)
Felt sad and needed a book that would cheer me up. My copy of this went missing ages ago so I bought a new copy just after Pratchett died... so that's what I picked. And yup, it worked. Made me happy over the last few days. This is still probably my favourite Discworld - not because it's the best, necessarily, but because I feel the like the jokes are for me. And I know there are a few that I don't get. And I love it

Alexandra is starting Big Boys Don't Cry
“My boys—my real boys—used to call me “Maggie.” They took care of me and I took care of them. I used to love cooking for them” Excerpt From: Kratman, Tom. “Big Boys Don't Cry.” Yup, that's a warship speaking. Also, "woe I've lost my humans and they've been replaced with drones!" ... now why does that sound familiar again?

Hey, with Kim Stanley Robinson's AURORA I hit 500 books read since I started keeping track in 2011! includes 31 graphic novels and a few short stories as well... I started tracking female authors in 2013; I've read 135 female authored-books since then.

So if I was going to start a serious read of novels and anthols for 2015, looking forward to 2016 awards, what should I be reading and looking forward to?
