R. Is feeling somewhat better and goes out. When he comes home upset after an acquaintance has died after a horse accident his mother and sister have come. He insists the sis can't marry her fiancee. His friend gets them to leave R promising a couple reports on R before they retire for the night. It seems he is smitten.

Now he's just come across an acquaintance trampled by a carriage who dies soon after, leaving an I'll wife ad children. Then when he gets home his mother and sister have arrived.

Oh the remorse (if that is the right word). Clearly R. wants to be done with the deception, he basically tries to get people to figure out that he murdered the ladies, but they cant seem to bring themselves to believe it. Will he turn himself in? Clearly he thinks he's going to.

finished the intro. planning to use my Dorian journal as the journal and just use a stone from house landscape as the stone. Most memorable bit so far: 'Nothing is easy for the unwilling.'

R. has noticed a girl who seems 'off' and realizes she is maybe 16 and drunk, evidently dressed by someone else (probably after being violated) and he wants to stop a lecherous middle aged man from taking advantage. he gets cops involved, then waves them off and figures he will let things take their course. this all seems odd to me, maybe trying to illustrate mental stability issues?

very sad stats about incarceration levels of black vs. white young men, and troubling exposure of how politicians have scored with the public by playing to their fears and building up the prison system even when states show it has been ineffective.

chap 3 is evidently 2% of the book! raskolnikov read the letter from his mother about his sister Dounia and her lawyer suitor and their expected trip to Petersburg.

ch 5 on the 2nd time through. his intros to the essays, giving his thoughts about what led him there, why he wrote on that topic, how he feels about it now after some time with some perspective-really enlightening.

more about Obama and his optimism but also about Trump and the racism, perceived or not, that made him possible. in the epilog now.

Commander smuggled her into essentially a brothel. Serena (wife) also arranged a meeting for her with servant Nick, which turns into a continuing tryst. and she sees more women hanged for sins but they are no longer detailed.
