It's a treasured experience to pick up a classic I've never yet read and quickly realize, "OOOOH. Yep. Got it. You deserved that classic status. Sold! TAKE ME ON THE RIDE!"

I remember the LOTR trilogy was like this for me. And Brave New World. And Count of Monte Cristo. I haven't gotten to the monster parts yet, but this narrative has me spellbound! This is BEAUTIFUL! Just in time for spooky season :)

I started this very skeptical (journalists writing about health-related science are responsible for some of the worst fad health trends in my lifetime). But at 39% I’m loving all the information about how nasal breathing is so much better for you in like ten ways, and how we have “devolved” as far as our breathing ability goes. I’m into it!

You gotta walk a REAL fine line when you attempt to write a historical fiction with a murder/revenge plot AND a supernatural element, but this book ain’t just walking, it’s STRUTTING down that line!

China 1908. “Fox wives” aka mythical foxes who can turn into seductive women who drain the life out of men. A fox on a mission to avenge the death of her baby at the hands of a photographer. So far so good!

This book is intense, dealing with the weight of the small group of physicists and mathematicians who created The Bomb and all the policies that came after it (like Mutually Assured Destruction). It also chronicles how many of these same men (they’re all men) went mad with the weight of their choices and the complexity of the new systems they’d postulated. Only read of you are in the mood for brooding!

I CANNOT believe this book was written in the author’s THIRD language. Writing superb, though topic so far has been sad and pessimistic, if humane.

Wow I’m essentially to the end of Season 2 of the show by this point in the book. This, like Dune, is the rare book where I’m glad I watched the movie/show first, it gives me great visuals and insight into the characters, where the book structure might have made me overlook things.

“Wool” was an absolutely terrible name. The change to “Silo” for the show was the right call.

Lindsey Memory is on page 129 of 194 of Body Safety for Young Children: Empowering Caring Adults
She has been referring to “Body Safety Rules” for the entire book but finally lays out eleven of them on p. 139. She should have written one book for parents and a second for teachers/coaches, nannies, etc. Instead she tries to talk to both separately, almost at random, and it is a confusing mess. I have to work to wrench good parenting advice out of it.

I’m kind of confused. She says her whole vision was for governments to be able to utilize Facebook as a policy tool, then she also says doesn’t want Facebook to be used for advocacy? I don’t understand the difference.

Oof this author definitely assumed his readers took/remember chemistry… entertaining but quite science heavy. What did I expect though??

I have found the organization of this book confusing; she has been referring to “body boundaries” to teach kids for several chapters but never explained what those were. I even flipped back to see if I missed like a list of boundaries anywhere. She finally starts laying the concept out on page 65.

Why does this book feature a babysitter contract form before a boundary explainer?

Great book. But these later chapters are too bogged down in the conceptual rather than any practical application, which is what I’d be more interested in. I know the second to last chapter is about application, but I still have to slog through chapters about “divine violence” and a friendship-centered “political theology” to get there. 🥱

Lucretzia is just… dumb? Is that what is happening? The author still hasn’t sketched out what exactly in her character has made it so she understands essentially nothing about her station in life or her responsibilities as a woman.

So far I disagree with any haters that say it’s not well-written, I think the prose is lovely (the dreamy Italian-esque accent of the narrator helps).

Making Jim into a covert, classics-educated bibliophile with authorial ambitions seems like a kind of solipsistic choice on the part of the actual author of this book. It’s really distracting.

Dang it, so many people like this book, I was really excited for it. I’ll keep going, but this particular artistic choice keeps rubbing me the wrong way so far.

I wasn’t going to read it, I was going to let this series go…But then I returned some books to the library tonight and was browsing the New Arrivals display and there it was! I figured I would give the print version a shot. I actually think some of my hatred for the second one stems from the audiobook narrator’s slight vocal fry.

I deserve my fate ;)

I hate myself for being into these, I can't even tell you. Just as much dumb dialogue and clunky plot devices as the first book, and three times as long! Sarcastic yippee.

I am going to throw something if Violet mentions that she used to climb trees with Dain one more time.

But. Mercifully, the second half is actually moving with fun action. I can't look away :)

My finger is itching towards that DNF button… like I absolutely hate this main character. I’m hate-reading to the end though. Screw Jane, all I want is to know is if she will finally get Daisy’s ghost’s message to her mom.

Also Jane is a TERRIBLE archivist. 👎
