marks itself as "read" literally every single time i open the document on kindle, so, that's gonna be fun. but aside from that i'm having a blast with this already, on a level of sheer prose this absolutely rolls off the tongue. a lot of it i'm finding is best read aloud just for the sheer musicality of the language, and the surreal maritime setting is lovely

holy shit yes this is exactly what i fucking needed and kiernan never disappoints. layers on layers of metafiction and storytelling deceit, found documents and diary entries and even fiction-within-fiction, and the overarching occurrences and sarah's vivid accounts are genuinely some of the most chilling i've read in horror fiction. an actual chillfest with a lot to think about already

the language in this is as percussive and electrifying as song lyric, what a wonderful mood

can't get over how lovely this is. lovingly brushed and real characters and themes of searching for meaning and identity while living as a marginalized class with a touch of sweet magical realism and wonderful humor. not as dense as beloved and far more straightforward but just as wonderful to read
