Talking about the clear successes of a work that does everything it sets out to do incredibly and speaks for itself on every [bogglingly dense] level of text may be folly but I'll write something here anyway because as the book explores, word is divine wish after all. A sweeping historical and political panorama that enriches and recontextualizes my understanding of the first book and also allows this one to stand as its own entity, a deeply lived-in centuries long odyssey of a single scorned woman who we see self-actualize throughout the slow march of history and its tendencies to repress said self-actualization among the oppressed like her. Sogolon seeks out and confirms more fundamental truths than Tracker could in the first book, but like him she is still her own flawed individual soul, only one pinpoint among infinite possible perspectives in a world too massive and surreal to really get a solid grip on [much like our own]. But neither narrators' accounts are anything close to Untrue, even among their own biases and fabrications... reality not as a single defined thing with a solid and tangible definition but reality as elastic and fluid as storytelling itself, a world where truth is found in the contradictions that comprise the subjectivities that make up this dreamworld. And also Sogolon and Tracker just literally perfect foils, and constantly phenomenal character writing in general?? Fantasy worldbuilding that should be considered up there with the greats?? Challenging but extremely rewarding dialogue that is like nothing else in literature, openly and boldly queer just like the first book, and a story that is constantly surprising, brutal, heartbreaking, empathetic, funny, probing every part of the human experience you can think of?? As I said it really just speaks for itself, my own gushing over it is unhelpful and I'd rather it be left as it is. If and when the third book sticks the landing this series genuinely might end up being as genre-defining as LOTR and I don't think I'm exaggerating at all, I'm so grateful these books exist and I am beyond excited to see how this story ends. ...more "
