For example, in the first chapter he says "Tuanul," and it took me several rereads to figure out that that's the planet's name: it isn't specified anywhere in the book. The planet is said to be "less than imposing," but with no explanation or description. Same goes for the character that is introduced. Textbook telling instead of showing.

My initial thoughts are that the author's descriptions do a good job of communicating internal monologues and vague ideas, and a poor job of describing scenes and environments so that the reader can visualize the scene. The author shouldn't rely on the movie to do that work for him.
