Interesting comment on liberal education in the second chapter re: Mrs Goddard

The dog also gives me weird vibes. Like the author wants you to feel like this is hyper realistic, because there are very intense scenes (particularly one with an attempted SA) and traumatizing subjects brought up incredibly early in the book, but the dog has narration as if it's a fucking Disney character, like it understands what's going on around them, which just doesn't fit the gritty world the author is building

Also: for a book purporting feminism, it sure does make the only other female main character so far hella catty towards the other female character and a complete stereotype... In addition to being explicitly described as plus sized, while our protagonist is just stunningly beautiful. Yikes.

And the things she says to her after Calvin dies? Jesus dude even if you hated her you wouldn't act like that. It's cartoonish

Plot is fine so far, but I'm definitely less impressed than I expected to be. The romance is very... hallmark-movie-esque. Man who's essentially perfect dies too young and leaves behind his pregnant partner? This and a lot of other parts are just like... Sadness porn. Yeah, it's a good story so far but the writing is definitely weak at times.

I'm enjoying this so far but "I'm a scientist Calvin, I knew" is a hilarious and insane answer in response to asking how you knew your brother was gay.

I'm listening to this in audio book form because I have a lot more time for that than reading my physically book (sadly). However, I do think I'll need to go back a bit and reread in the physical book, because Dickens' prose is difficult to keep up with in audiobook form. If my brain strays at all I find that I am totally lost.
