So glad I'm not committed to only reading books with likeable characters. Also, is the new trend in literary fiction dismissing all the conventions of punctuation? Quotation marks always seem to be the first to go.

I love that at times this reads like a philosophical work

Is it paradoxical to say I find reading some parts of this book to be a struggle and still enjoy it all the same? There's a time for effortless prose and there's a time for books that make you put work in and force you to slow down.

i have a hard time believing this is a stand-alone

Thoughts:
- i don't outright hate this anymore
- Those 40 or so pages where she was conflicted about whether to say yes to the proposal confounded me
- That age difference is not cute

I don't know why I continue to hate-read, we're careening straight to a 1 star review 😬

I'm nothing if not predictable. The first half of a book always trickles by while the last half flies by.

I love the specificity of Lagos (all pf Nigeria really) culture in this- the pidgin, the bribes and corruption, their househelp. Makes me feel like I'm back.

it's like this entire book, the characters, the plot, everything, is passing through me. i'm reading the words and i guess i'm computing them but nothing is leaving a lasting impression

umm not enthralled by the writing so far. Also, I'm having a really hard time dissociating Hank's voice from the character's voice ( a problem I also have, albeit, to a lesser extent, with Joh'n's book). But what definitive declarations can you really make about a book only 10 pages in.
