Part II

Sometimes this book feels almost as difficult to follow as the Wake itself.

I’ll finish this up tomorrow, completing my final book of the year. Somehow, without really noticing, I read more nonfiction than fiction in 2021. That’s likely part of the reason it just didn’t feel like a very fulfilling reading year. Looking forward to getting back to the kind of stuff I love in 2022. That said, this particular NF book has been excellent.

Not seeing how asserting an American caste system entirely apart from a class system (entangled with racism) has any political expediency, particularly when you open your book with such a milktoast neoliberal interpretation of the 2016 election.

Wow. Already we are standing up to Nazis and getting a CNN-approved take on the 2016 election. Why was I expecting something more radical? After all, ‘twas a gift from my overlords.

Yeah I think I’d be into an entire book about the development of the universal remote.

Bit of a page-turner, actually. Endlessly inventive prose, even obnoxiously, occasionally. But in a way that works for me far better than the Powers of Goldbug. Probably helps that we aren’t required to like this Joshua Cohen character.

Separately, the two narratives were perfect, but I’m not sure Winterson is bringing them together very well.

Didn’t see my edition cataloged here, but this one has the same page count.

Sad to report that I was a little let down by Madame Swann at Home. Had its bright spots, no doubt, but lacked the consistent thrill of Swann’s Way. Found my mind wandering quite a lot.

Is not the rhetorical question Zizek’s favorite literary device?

Am I witnessing the origin of theory-speak? Some of this is hard to follow.
