I think Emerson is so rash and self-absorbed. What she seems to think is personal strength, I'd argue, is stupidity. She doesn't care enough about her friends, just the town.

For a second I thought the main character wouldn't be special somehow. Maybe she'd be the one regular human in her friend group of secret witches. Having been proven wrong, at least we're good-naturedly acknowledging the trope!
