Both serious and funny. I really like the characters and all the stories.

Saucy and serious!

All the different characters demonstrate the diversity of the immigrant experience.

Learned about this book from a politico interview and parts of the descriptions made me laugh hysterically. I already like many of the characters even though I was hoping for a light book. I feel like this book is generally serious with bits of humor.

Learning a lot, but ready to be finished.

Important points, but hard to stay engaged and interested.

Interesting, but dense and hard to get through.

I am learning a lot of history and cultural context, but also laughing hysterically. I started laughing at a section about a dance performance in a school so hard that I was crying and gasping for air. My fellow metro riders were perplexed.

Poor powerful/moving scenes: when maverick encounters the police and his kids start crying while they are watching their daddy gets searched. Starr talking with Devante and learning more about the dynamic of the Kings in the neighborhood. Starr's parents arguing about moving out of the neighborhood.

Some of the most powerful scenes: The conversation between Starr and her dad about the meaning of the Hate U Give. The weekend trip to Uncle Carlos' house. The conversation between Starr's parents about whether to live in a different neighborhood.

very realistic, insightful, and heart breaking.

The first chapter is both relatable in the sense of trying to fit into a high school party and completely unbelievable to be in a situation of watching an innocent friend get shot.

Meeting racist family members is intense to read about; I also keep thinking about Leonie as a mother. She wants the title, but never thinks about her children's best interests.

Getting pulled over and cuffed was awful. Angry that Misty did not get cuffed or seem to have any negative consequences.

Motivated to finish after really good book club meeting. I am totally rooting for Jojo!

Beautifully written, insightful and incredibly sad. I already love Jojo!

I am officially losing sleep because I cannot stop reading this book before bed. I am cheering so hard for Werner and Marie Laure. The other characters are also both endearing and frustrating. Even though I have not yet finished, I am recommending this book to everyone I know. I am stuck between wanting to savor and not reading fast enough to satisfy my curiosity.

#fridayreads Each chapter is powerful and poignant. I find myself holding my breath sometimes with worry, other times with sadness, and often with love for the characters and writing.

Addicting. I find myself thinking about the characters a lot and wishing for more time to read.

Heart racing. Cannot read the story fast enough, but also struggling to read slowly so that I can savor each word. Glad for a long train ride :)

The passages about adjusting to changes during childhood feel so relatable and realistic.

Got from library in hopes that it would be picked for book club. Unfortunately, it was not selected but I am already hooked!

No doubt that FDR did wonderful things and changed the political landscape. However, I am disappointed with his lack of action and leadership against the internment of Japanese Americans
