Mr Oliver doesn't shy away from pointing out the hypocrisy of aids - how it was always about sale of outdated weapons and was accompanied by trade recommendations. The endnote is not entirely apolitical. The book sets the tone for a conclusion that Western involvement with Africa wasn't all bad - in fact, with the institutions that were established Africa came out more prosperous than parts that are in conflict.

If slavery and oppression increased during colonial rule in Africa, Mr Oliver offers a sort of consolation to the Western mind by pointing out that slavery had already existed in Africa or that Western presence in Africa was through infiltration rather than conquest - seemingly a development which Fascism alone should be blamed for. I am not learned enough to take a stance here. But something smells fishy here.

The Italian occupation in 1935 is seen as damaging and hopeless aggression but somehow the British or Dutch presence in Africa during 19th is presented as an unfortunate, although inevitable development.

There are the scoffery and gaucherie of the settler society, but the account of life in New Zealand is characteristically humorous and accurate. I would remember as one of the differences Lady Barker points out is that you need to tell "how" things are done - ordering what to be done is not enough.

Judged by modern standards, this would seem a rather withdrawn style of writing - exhibiting a rather passive outlook towards life. But then, I am expecting it to read like a postcolonial piece.

Keynes talks about cointegration (roughly) and covariance of consumption indices with respective to supply indices (and the foreign exchange rates).
