The 16th century weren't as repressed. The carnivals drew people from all classes except the uppermost and lewd poetry, dancing or phallic imagery was common.

The status of women as not as bad in 16th century. Of course, many women found women unsuitable for command but that didn't prevent upper strata women from ruling at different levels.

The average age of women to marry in Elizabethan England was 22 (this was far higher than in Southern Europe).

Trade was also quite well-developed in 16th century. Belgium benefited from the Portuguese and Spanish trade.

Greer's is a groundbreaking and phenomenal book in many ways. In retrospect however it also suffers from a little bit of insensitivity and bitterness - some of which seems fair. There are times when the tone of the book does not match the immense acadamic energy that has gone into the book.

The case study of why black women were recorded to have higher self esteem than white women seems botched but its criticism by sommers is not very convincing either.
