This chapter on civic engagement is powerful, and brings up all sorts of issues around youth, including power of social media for cultural change and fear that youth get used for political purposes. Points around connected civics are important to consider.

Intriguing chapter on commerce and corporate policies, and how the influence of monetizing content in participatory networks has yet to play itself out. What obligation do companies have for our 'greater good'? And how does profit shape participation?

I just finished chapter on learning and literacies, and found threads insightful, particularly around the role of schools in nurturing or extinguishing student engagement in Connected Learning. I thought the Q about non-contributing participants went unanswered, alas.

I am having trouble wrapping my head around genres of participation. But I appreciate emphasis on relationships with peers/caring adults to help young people make a shift into Connected Learning. Interesting that not all kids want to make that shift, and if choice is a central idea, do we let young people willingly disengage? How does that play out in a classroom?

Mimi Ito's intro to this chapter (3) dives into equity issues, and access issues beyond access to technology ... What barriers are there for entry into a participatory culture? Factor in race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status and more ... And it becomes complicated. And important ... Looking forward to what the three of them have to say ....

I appreciate the acknowledgement by danah boyd that the wide array of interests and experiences of young people make it "nearly impossible" to have these conversations of youth culture. There is no monolithic identity. Yet, the topic of access and socio-economics and language are extremely important elements. Who is being left behind? How do we keep them in the fold?

Great quote by Jenkins after discussion about the native/immigrant dichotomy. "It assumes a world where the realms of children/youth and adults are absolutely separate, rather than one where they interact with each other in a networked culture ...."

I find this dialogue as book format interesting ... I feel as if I am eavesdropping on their conversation (their intent) ... did they set up a participatory site for readers to engage in the conversation? Aren't books flat?
