He could feel Evanjalin's eyes on him as the sun before them disappeared at a speed beyond reckoning. "Then I will demand that you speak Lumateran when we are alone," Evanjalin said, interrupting his thoughts.
"Will you?" he mocked. "And why is that?"
"Because without our language, we have lost ourselves. Who are we without our words?"

He held her up and wiped her face with the hem of his shirt. Their eyes met, and he saw a bleakness there that made him choke. Suddenly he wanted the power to wipe such hopelessness away. That moment in front of the guards, he had allowed emotion to cloud his reason. Yet he felt no regret. He understood, with a clarity that confused him, that if anyone dared touch her again, his sword would not stay in it scabbard.

Still filled with his own anger, Finnikin walked over and grabbed him by the hair.
"My mother, unlike yours, never exchanged sexual favors for a piece of silver," he said, addressing the first insult by banging the boy's head against the trunk of a tree. "And," he said with another resounding thump, "although I'm very familiar with that part of the female body, I take offense at being labeled one."

I didn't know it at the time, but I'd just become the first person to play an entirely new type of videogame. When GSS got wind of the WarGames simulation inside the First Gate, the company quickly patented the idea and began to buy up the rights to old movies and TV shows and convert them into immersive interactive games.

Inaccurate! Yoostar is a game like this that already exists. Booo.

I noticed my reflection in the game's screen. It wasn't my avatar's face I saw there. It was Matthew Broderick's face. A young pre-Ferris Bueller and pre-Ladyhawke Matthew Broderick.
Then I knew where I was. And who I was.
I was David Lightman, Matthew Broderick's character in the movie WarGames. And this was his first scene in the film. I was in the movie.

"Am I supposed to want you this much?" she whispered. "I should be working. I need to ..." Something. There was undoubtedly something she ought to be doing instead of playing with the dip of his spine.
He bent his head. "Nadia." His voice was low, the word a warm breath against her cheek. "You are supposed to have me anytime, anywhere, any way you wish. Work will still be there afterward."

Another round of gunfire blared around us. "Son of a bitch," Garrett said as bullets ricocheted in every direction. "Who the fuck is that, anyway?"
"Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that he told me his name. It's Let's-Get-the-Fuck-Outta-Dodge Redenbacher."

"If you're not going to tell me where you are, if you're not going to trust me to help you, then why are you here? Why bother?"
After the room reverberated with a soft growl, I felt him leave. I felt his essence drain from the room, the cold stillness that lingered in his wake. A split second before he vanished completely, he brushed past me, whispered in my ear. "Because you're the reason I breathe."

"And when you were in high school," he continued, as though he were reliving a dream, "the way you carried your books. The arch of your back. The flawlessness of your skin. I craved you like an animal craves blood."
I grew weaker with each word, with each heartbeat that reverberated toward me.
A slow, calculating smile spread across his face. "If you ever bother my sister again, I'll slice you in two."

"Little grim girl," he said, his voice like butterscotch, smooth and sweet and so tempting, my mouth literally watered. "I used to watch the way you ran through the park to get to the swings, the way your glistening hair spilled over your shoulders and fell in tangles down your back. The way your lips turned red when you ate Popsicles. And your smile." A heavy sigh slid through his mouth. "My God, it was blinding."
