At the age of six, the criteria for handsome was, simply: "Is he not related to me?" and "Have I seen him on television?" That was it. By this standard, Larry Bird, Dick Clark, Andy Rooney. All handsome guys.

I stayed at a pretty normal weight until college, when I put on the freshman thirty-five in the first six months. What's that? You've never heard of the freshman thirty-five? That's funny, because neither had my parents, who welcomed me home on spring vacation with mild horror. I was a vaguely familiar food monster who had eaten their daughter.

My mom's a doctor, but because she came from India and then Africa, where childhood obesity was not a problem, she put no premium on having skinny kids. In fact, she and my dad didn't mind having a chubby daughter. Part of me wonders if it even made them feel a little prosperous, like Have you seen our overweight Indian child? Do you know how statistically rare this is?

"Don't be closer to twice a friend's weight than to her actual weight," I told myself. This little mantra has helped me stave off obesity for more than two decades.

This book will take you two days to read. Did you even see the cover? It's mostly pink. If you're reading this book every night for months, something is not right.

You should know I disagree with a lot of traditional advice. For instance, they say the best revenge is living well. I say it's acid in the face—who will love them now? Another old saying is that revenge is a dish best served cold. But it feels best served piping hot, straight out of the oven of outrage.

In the absence of human relationships I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories thread in history; I experienced adolescence by association. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.

Did I somehow download the punctuation-lite version of this book or is Mafi just rationing her quotation marks and commas?

If it's too dark to tell he's not wearing a shirt, how can she see his "eyes are the perfect shade of cobalt, blue like a blossoming bruise, clear and deep and decided" then?

I want to smash this concrete world into oblivion. I want to be bigger, better, stronger.

After seeing the word "shatter" for a third time, I thought I'd used my handy search feature to see how many times it appears. 18! That's not LKH-let's-beat-a-word-to-death bad, but still, I don't like seeing part of the title of the book used so often since Mafi obviously knows how to use a thesaurus.

I always wonder about raindrops.

I just realized I have less than 90 pages left. Even though I really want to abandon this, I can't when there's so little left. Argh. Must. Push. THROUGH.

Posted back in September, yet I completely missed it. Sticky shelves are pretty cool. And no, I don't mean the place where you keep all of your erotica.

I don't understand why she feels the need to be loyal to the French service anymore. They're all such horrible people.

I think the fact that this is 3rd person omniscient is really helping me enjoy this book. Normally the whole back-and-forth due to the two main characters being enemies gets annoying, but because I'm not actually in their heads it's not bothering me as much as it normally does. I'm also not dreading the whole "Surprise! I'm not who you think I am," moment; I'm actually looking forward to it.

"I remember what we have done together. I am almost sure it was not decent." But she let him comb her hair back with his fingers and tuck a blanket around her and arrange her at ease along the seat. "I will decide what to do about it when I am awake. Perhaps I will try to strangle you once more. Though you have the most beautiful body imaginable. Like a large animal."

I already like Annique but now I think I'm in love.
