This novel goes down as smoothly as a heaping bowl of borscht. The warmth and particular humanism of Tolstoy make the story quite literally slide through the senses with ease.

This one is a winner.

I am caught up in the yearning this book celebrates. A labyrinth of bittersweet memories.

Now I remember why I sought his books so eagerly. And why they frustrated me so. Mysteries on top of mysteries. Edging us closer to a revelation that may or may not come. Fowles, you bastard.

Excellent novel. Fowles was one of my early favorites but after The Ebony Tower, I unaccountably (and regretfully) abandoned him. This book has lain on my shelves for more than twenty years and is now getting the scrutiny it deserves.
