I would’ve never imagined that war planning went into such detail and sophistication. The German military and political leadership does not seem a lot different from the coming of the Nazis. There is a nationalistic superiority that’s hard to stomach.

Although I do like this novel, I do not care for the long philosophical/psychological/cultural lectures by the narrator on the Steppenwolf and references to other German philosophers such as Nietzsche and Hegel. There is also a bit of elitism from Hesse that’s distasteful.

Barbara Tuchman is always a joy to read.

I’ve forgotten how good Hemingway is.
