Don’t mistake this book as a collection of stories. Saunders shows the reader a possible way to read or to write. It’s really quite fun.

Into the second half where the second generation of Heathcliff and Cathy replay the roles of the first generation, but with much less storm and stress.

Not as good as I thought it would be. Really quite rudimentary. Elison produces a pretty basic teenage boy. So far only the situation and the telepathic dog Blood saves it.

Another reading of one of my favorites, lest I be disappointed by something new.

For the novella: A Member of the Wedding, the last longer fiction by McCullers I have not read.

Interesting blend of Chinese political history and science fiction.

Not a very interesting story on any level, but since it was the first gothic novel, a reader of the 18th century must’ve found it a novelty.

Another re-read of this forceful story and its accompanying tales. Such a delightful return.

I have now reached the title story, and the preceeding stories are average Faulkner instead of the exceptional one of the novels. Gavin Stevens' wit is prominent, but the subject matter is beneath him. The "Gavin Stevens" we encounter in the novels, especially "The Town," is much better.

“Because I’m happy to be home. I was lonely too,” he said, and it was part of the truth, and the other part he knew he could not explain to her. Because all the children were different.

Diversity is all.

Interesting novel about near destruction of earth, cloning of humans, forced conditioning, uniformity (problem since it flattens intelligence and destroys creativity: how can a society problem solve without creativity?), and, of course, survival.

Another reading (six, seven, don’t remember). End of Act 1. Is there a better father and son scene than between Hamlet and Hamlet? What fathers demand of their sons. What plague have you visited upon the head of your son, Hamlet?

A difficult reconciliation: the manner in which identity and character among the early Hebrews are defined is quite different than how we today define ourselves. A different conceptual universe and culture: how we perceive Jacob is quite different from how he determines himself.
