I have finished my re-read of Part I. I had forgotten quite how angry this book is. How much it is an attack on the England of the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It's fabulously written though.

Have started a re-read in companionship with H.D.'s Bid Me To Live. Because they're connected. Because H.D. and Aldington were married during WW1. They also feature in D.H. Lawrence's 'Aaron's Rod' and John Cournos's 'Miranda Master's'.

I've read the long introduction and notes. This is a re-read for 'Remembrance Reads'. I'll re-read 'Death of A Hero' alongside it.

"In August 1917, when it appeared to everyone that the war might go on forever, Young recorded in his diary a list of good friends who had died, no fewer than twenty-five, and this left room for those he termed acquaintances; of these there were another twenty-five."

Gardner has split the book into sections by theme. There's some poems here from other fronts than the Western Front - Gallipoli, Mesopotamia and West Africa - and from POWs and from the Home Front.

This is so good. I'm going to finish this in November, which is 'Remembrance Reads' for me.

Six Chapters left. The revolution is nearly here. Trotsky is fighting the battles of 1930 at the same time.
