I feel very sorry for the robot. Then again, perhaps they had a hand in shaping the human society?

I cannot find much to say about this book. The writing is flowery and devoid of ideas that are not already shopworn. There's no narrative pull unless you submit to this depiction of love as stalking

A bit lost. Not sure how to read the various elements. Is there something I should be getting from the embedded sci fi that relates to the exterior stories? Because, in failing to see the connection, I often glaze over in those sections. Then, I worry that maybe I'm not paying attention. Then, it flips back to Iris, and if I'm not careful my brain tunes it out on the same basis: it feels like colour rather than story

Margaret Atwood certainly has a keen understanding of kipple, though she does seem to be very optimistic about the volumes

As a time capsule of our current anxieties, it is apropos. As a novel, it is weak. Even as a time capsule, I cannot imagine that anybody will read this in 20 years time

This is too sentimental for my taste. This book is too interested in my liking its protagonist to have much to say beyond being an apologia for aristocratic privilege

I have difficulty in distinguishing this from caricature. There's a little of it that feels like the exposition of technical matters in Moby Dick, and a little of it that feels like a Franz Kafka short story

Cleverly confined to a slice of Lovecraft that centers on warlocks in his locale, this book has the great advantages of not being written by an avowed racist, of enjoying vivid continuity between the stories, and of using its protagonists as distinct lenses, rather than as drab crash test dummies. What gets lost in this transformation is the cosmic horror. It is unclear whether the approach would work on other slices

Very much enjoying the reread. Feel my understanding of what is being proposed as the natural understanding of the wave function is coming into clearer focus. In particular, I have started to be persuaded to the concept of non-interacting components of the wave function

A theogony for cosmic pansychism, so long as you believe the aggregation of consciousness is telepathic in nature and unconstrained by the laws of physics

I think I am more interested in the fact of the tip of the iceberg than I am of the seven eighths below the surface. For example, for me, Phil Resch trying to convince Deckard that owning a squirrel proves that he is not an Android is a more effective rendering of the characters internal anxieties than much of what is happening in this novel

I love the way the ending recapitulates the ending of The Second Variety. Also, just how pernicious the androids are. On rereading since 2049, it is weird how much of the book that movie picks up on, yet makes the androids noble
