About halfway through. So so good, but very different than the others. It’s been so long since I saw the movie, there are a lot of things I have forgotten.

Classic dispies believe some crazy things. I’m getting more and more reformed the older I get. Also concerned that I agree with the Reconstructionist definition of the Kingdom of God…

I think if this book was a tiny bit longer it would make a better case for these sensibilities. I think it’s good, but I don’t feel like this chapter has defended his conclusions as well.

Stayed up late with Julia last night so I got some more reading in. I like the people Smith chooses to represent his point. He’s a good author and actually incredibly smart (translating some of these works from Greek and Latin)

I love pre modern exegesis. They did not see a distinction between exegeting and doing theology. They cannot be separated as we do now.

Caleb Dyer is on page 102 of 192 of Handbook on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament: Exegesis And Interpretation
This book has been pretty good so far! I’d recommend it currently as the best book I’ve read on OT use of NT, but as that list is very short that isn’t saying much lol. I want to read one that isn’t focused on proving anything to the secular world since I don’t think that accomplishes much, and he has a fair amount of that.

Been jumping around reading different parts. Really an incredible read, so compelling and clear. Interested to get to the Covenant of Redemption since that is the one I am least familiar with.

Reformed Covenant Theology: A Systematic Introduction

Caleb Dyer is on page 55 of 224 of The Life of Moses
Read his historical summary of the life of Moses. It’s interest how he lays out his life in relation to the purpose of the book. The purpose is to push his friend on into greater holiness, which has no limits, so he focuses on the virtuous parts of Moses’ life. Also, it wild to think of God as being the ultimate Good, so our virtuous pursuit of him is a participation in him.

Trying to decide where I land on what baptism accomplishes. The Reformed view is that God has objectively revealed himself in Word and sacrament, so is it a stretch to say that, like the parable of the sower and soils, baptism could deposit the seed of the gospel? And it would need to grow into faith and produce good fruit through the Holy Spirit?

Baptism has the same substance as the Word preached, namely Christ himself. It becomes efficacious through the Holy Spirit and faith.
