As M is getting ready for bed. Z jumps over into her balcony and there’s some flirty banter. Leads her with a scorpion tailed knife. As she is going to bed, she sees a shadow and realizes it’s a dead person who warns her ‘ do not trust him’, and one can assume him is Zevander.

Z helps guard Dorian on an attempt to lead the city, but they’re stopped by the commoners who are starving for VIVICANTEUM. They turn around to the castle Z goes to the tavern where he sees Gavroche slipping an erection powder into someone’s beer to try to make money for the madam of the brothel he stays in.

She does her best to be helpful around the castle and to help out with Bray

RYKAIA goes to Z to tell him M has gotten into NRAN’s dungeon. They rushed there to find BRAN sooth and asleep in her lab. She asked questions afterwards about why he’s down there and about the curse. Z insists that she sleep in the upper bedroom area. Well, she annoys him. he finds himself attracted to her.

In the morning, Rykaia wakes her up and she gets ready to train. As she is dressed, it’s explained that her choker was a sign she was cursed, like Z’s mask he has to wear in public. She has to wear pants for the first time. D comes back and asks her if she opened the book, & that it’s her people’s history. They agree to discuss it after training.

Dragons & raptors battle in the sky in the book. Maevyth has questions about the illustrations that came to life. She closes the book and can’t help but think of Zevander.

She can’t sleep in her cell, but has a book. She opens it and it tells her of the land’s history, but it burns her finger at one point. It animates, talking of the death goddess. She sees black haired warriors with raven makeup on their faces and black birds that look like Raivox. They battle blond men to slaughter, & a violet glow on the castle, that burns her finger. Flame appears on page & the word Deimos.

Rykaia brings M to Z’s room to take a bath, since he should be busy for a while. She leaves M alone, and she gets cleaned up, but thinks about her sister. As she gets out, Z enters the room. He apologizes for losing his temper, takes her to the maid to give her clothes to for laundering, and takes her back to her cel to lock her in for the night. No remorse. She’s 🥵 for him.

Z tells D to train M, but D insists Z is the best man for the job, surviving the sablefyre. Z points out she only gets 2 weeks of training before D has to take her away.

Z comes to M’s cell with a bowl of dinner. As she eats, he explains she’ll be training in the morning & they get into a spat, with him knocking her back onto the bed and threatening her. She begs to go back to the woods, & he refuses. She kicks him in the groin, and he leaves her in the cell with the threat that she will be training in the morning.

Rykaia talks Z into letting M have better quarters and a bath. He reluctantly agrees, but she also needs dinner. He checks on his fellow Letaliszts, Ravezio & Torryn, explaining that M is immune to his flame, & needs to be trained, which he is trusting Torryn with the task to start with fighting to see if that awakens her dormant Corvikae abilities.

She asks about Dolion and the bloodstones, & Z plays dumb, lying to tell her he has no knowledge of them. She tells him it’s the only thing that can destroy sablefyre. His flame reaches out to her as she passes, & he consciously pulls it back.

After the meeting Z is by the moat puking up the last of the Nilmerth & Melantha approaches him, guessing he’s got a tolerance. She knows he’s the king’s Letalisz, as a member of the group that did the interrogation. She knows his sigil is derivation, not affliction. Melantha calls a Koryn out of the water, telling him she knows he’s cursed by sablefyre. She was once a prisoner in the Solassion mines, too.

The king shows him a charm that’s like Pandora’s box, made the day Dorjan was born, & his blood is linked to it, & if D dies, a plague is released on the world, & Cadavros bound it to D, which is why Z has to kill it. The discussion of the weird aura at Bonesguard comes up again, it was Corvikae, the king knows a mortal was there.

The king requests Z watch over Dorian & Calisza, his kids. Gen Loyce will be at the Becoming ceremony, King Jeret’s highest in command, who brutalized Z. The king asks to see Z’s face, which shows evidence of a curse that they haven’t found a cure for yet & the vibacanrum helps with. They discuss Dolion’s execution, and that he was obsessed with Cadavros the monster, who is thought to be in the mortallands.

Z travels to see his king, and when he arrives, there are other people there to interrogate him. He has to take a truth-telling toxin named Nilmirth he’s built up a tolerance to. He’s able to lie to the king that Dolion is still alive, and that D was collecting bloodstones. The questions get too invasive and the king sends them away.

She sees a naked Aleysia in her cell, but wakes up. Rykaia is there, and explains what’s happened, so is Dolion who explains Maevyth’s blood makes her a weapon, since she was able to create a pile of bones before the disappearing, and she shows him the symbol on her palm.

They check on Branimir, who got worse with time, & Z couldn’t bring himself to kill. Dolion encourages Z to train Maevyth, which could take months, maybe years, to access her bloodline power. Otherwise, the king will have her executed.

Zevander puts her to sleep because she won’t stop talking. At the castle, Rykai takes a liking to Maevyth. They put her in a plush room to sleep, and Dolion and Zevander check for a sigil to make sure she’s of the goddess of death bloodline and find it.

They continue across the landscape, through the bog. Zevander tells her that her sister is probably dead, but Maevyth refuses to believe it.
