Really good. Unique story.

It is fine, if not good or great. Many of it seems common sense organizing.

Not sure how I never heard of this King novel. My favorite of his so far. I am curious to see if King sticks the landing on this one.

Book ebbs and flows. Some pages I find fascinating, which leads to reading several chapters in one sitting. Others, however, seem to drag on, which leads me to taking days if not weeks to get through ten pages. I do find the old map references interesting but this book is a three stars at best almost two-thirds of the way through.

Getting a bit too “here are a ton of facts but little to connect them.” I am hoping the book turns a corner in the last half.

Not a big fan of his memoir/professional history approach. Just not my cup of tea. Book is an interesting read, but the writing is a bit slow.

He is diving into other factors (i.e. diet) now. The author’s tactic of delving into self control vs. outside influences is a refreshing take.

Okay…author has got me hooked now. This quote sold me, among other points: “Companies will provide free meditation classes to help employees be more present. Yet those same companies will create algorithms that keep people addicted to virtual dopamine. Fuck that.”

So far a retread of things I have heard before. The exploration of the sleep studies expands upon my current knowledge, but not by much. I am hoping the author adds something unique to his approach.

Really good book that has well-written story and compelling characters.

So far author’s biggest takeaway is “put away your cell phone.”

Around Chapter 17 author begins diving into subtle pieces of Empire: development of plastics, standardization of materials during WWI and WWII, and medical expertise. Seems no-brainer but that might be the whole point of this book: Empire made it a no-brainer.

I am fascinated by the history of Puerto Rico. It is a perfect example of the empire by any other name the United Stats embarks on, both in the past and today (2025).

Good to see Demon’s comics become popular.

First two-thirds of prologue a bit of a slog. Then at the end the author picks up his writing and finds himself.

On to Hawaii and Alaska. So fascinating.

More sad tales with Martha, Emmy, Dory (losing the baby?) and Demon experiencing so many trials and tribulations.

Captivating. I cannot put it down. I knew U.S.A. Had empirical holding…but damn.

I think this will prove to be an enlightening read.

I feel bad for Emmy and Maggot. Emmy because she places no value on herself. Maggot because he will do anything (including sexual acts) to procure opioids and/or meth.
