Slowly moving through Ms. Bacall's autobiography. It's not that it's not fascinating, it's just considerably long and I have more time from my library to read it than other checked-out books. Besides, if a hold is placed- hell, I'll just buy the thing, she's my favorite. She is perceptive, opinionated and memorable- Lauren Bacall 1924-2014

First half felt like legalization propaganda.

2nd half is the extremely sad tale of how a troubled (read: depressed) young man took his own life and Beatrice Sparks took the story and made it into a Satanic scare tactic, known to many as Jay's Journal. Absolutely revolting.

Yep. Still only 5% done but this thing is 900 pages. I knew Lauren Bacall stalked Bette Davis in NYC but had no idea that she actually got to meet her and that Bette Davis encouraged a young Bacall to be an actress.

To my knowledge they never did a film together, but I'm sure Bacall will let us know as she's got no shortage of words.

It is sad that Bacall felt that she was ugly, goes to show you something I suppose

Sort of grotesque, but surprisingly easy to read.

Very disappointed at the moment. This anthology is a lesson in diminishing returns. I'm almost getting irritated by it at this point. Murakami came out strong during the first half of this set with wonderful absurd stories that still had a real-life edge, but the ones I'm reading toward the end make me bored as hell. They don't work; they don't make sense- and not in a fun way.

There's some very interesting material here. However, it fails in that it seems just as much a propaganda piece as the "diaries"/novels it criticizes. That is a major detractor for me. It seems to have a political agenda.

Did anyone get the hint that I idolize Ms. Bacall? Was it the profile picture that gave it away?

The e-book is 900+ pages. Already this is hilarious and I'm only 10 pages in because I have to read other books. You can tell Lauren Bacall wrote this- I can almost hear her deep voice reading it.

This book is so interesting. I don't think it's going to get the perfect 5 stars because some of the stories are notably better than others.

Strangely enough it reminds me of my recent read, Haunted, except there's no overarching story and this is WAY more whimsical and isn't gory at all. However, the off-beat absurdist humor is certainly there. I recommend this for sure.

OK... I'm starting to like the pacing a little more. I feel this will be too predictable to its obvious detriment but the character development and atmosphere are both well-done at my still very early stage in reading this novel.

I am fearful that this might be a DNF for me as I've survived a violent crime, and worse things than what happened to me are presented in this novel... and I know it's not fictional. My "scars" are still raw.

Biggest compliment is that if Paul Holes wrote this solely and is a detective, he's also a damn good writer.
