Ishiguro was actually insane for writing this concept. Still really liking

Thinking these characters feel a little too archetypal. How have I read them before? I don't really feel /invested/ in this story because it feels like I know what happens to all of the characters in this type of story. Maybe that's the problem with writing historical fiction, esp wwii. Or maybe it's me who's the problem. Otherwise super enjoyable and fast paced. It's critically acclaimed for a reason duh. Go Doerr!

I made a lot of progress on this but forget to update so here we are. I love slightly unsettling stories where you know there’s something there underneath, but I just have to read more to find out.

I don’t know what it is about John Green in 2017 and forever that makes him understand a nihilistic literary teen like it’s his own body. Please stop. I’m in this picture and i don’t like it

Pros: I am really liking the story, it reminds me a bit of a mix between Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan and The Book Thief by Markus Zuzak. Conclusion: wwii bildungsromans are similar

Cons: sometimes I detest ultra-short chapters and it feels like a waste of pages and tries to keep it together in fast-paced vignettes instead of scenes

I do like how interested Rooney is in people. Scratch that, not just people but their conditions and environments and social mannerisms. She creates these people, and then explores meditations on meaningful things like climate change, dead languages, systems of oppression, the value we place on celebrities, and sexual expectations among other things.

Ok I am loving the knife-sharp tension of ideas between Cal and Aron’s hopes, dreams, lifestyles, and strengths of character. The way in which they orbit around Adam’s fatherhood and Lee’s advice continue to fascinate. However, I have no idea what’s going on with the introducing of the Joe storyline this late in the narrative. Maybe it helps Kate’s downfall?
